Cruise clients need to check insurance cover

15 October 2009

More than a third of cruise passengers do not have adequate insurance for their trip, according to insurance company All Clear.
The firm estimates that as many as 34 per cent of passengers do not have policies that would cover them for illness at sea or the cancellation of shore excursions.
“A surprising number of people seem to rely on the basic medical provision on board ships,” said All Clear head of product development Chris Blackman. “However, in all but fairly minor emergencies, this will not be sufficient.
“If you are taken ill on board and need to be airlifted to shore, without insurance you will end up paying for it.”
Blackman also claimed standard insurance policies would not cover the cancellation of a shore excursion due to ill health or missed ports due to weather or a changed itinerary.
